EMI: First label to smarten up?!

31 March 2008 5 views 2 Comments

Rolling Stone article on EMI’s plan to change their business model to adjust to the effects of the digital revolution. Bout time one of these labels smartened up. After being bought out for $4.7 Billion by private equity firm Terra Firma, it seems that the new head honcho felt the need to do some house cleaning. This is just a sample of what he found…

“Hands was appalled at the label’s wastefulness, citing expensive gifts sent to artists, multimillion-dollar severance packages for executives and salaries that rose even as revenues dropped. “For everyone who runs a major label, making change is a big personal risk,” he says. “If you just keep things quiet, you can continue to earn some pretty massive salaries for a few more years until the whole thing comes to an end.”

Seems like the big wigs were content with milking the system till the end and riding this thing out. Further proof that the game needs some new blood. But the good news in all this is that they plan to place a heavier emphasis on A&R work. A label actually focusing on the music, who’d have thunk it.

Read on for more of the good news…

    Well ler’s see if they really do what they say they are going to do…I’m not saying this is going to pop off, but a lot of people say things like that when they are broke, but when that money comes back…they are back on their high horse. There are too many examples of that in the world so I’m not going to go any further

    And yes it is smart to jump on the bandwagon in terms of the whole digital crap that’s going on right about now. This machine{the computer} can really suck people up. Whether it’s new music, new blogs, new comments period….myspace even got us caught in the matrix and lets not even go there with youtube. Many people are making momey off of this new phenom….I’m just tryna go to rehab honestly. I want to go to the music store and buy the artists CD, but they kinda got me skeptical in terms of the paying full price for the whole CD and it’s only like 2 or 3 hot songs on it. I miss those days of getting my monies worth. Hip hop now is like overpaid hoes that are not even good at fucking… they just look like they could do some damage. The recession that is going on right now is bringing it back to it’s esscence…sadly to say just like the “crack era 80’s did” when a person doesn’t have shit they tend to get real creative {shit….I know I do}

    To have that hunger and drive is what fuels hip hop because you only get one chance and you gotta go in..either niggas is gona feel ya shit or they not… we just gotta be careful when we make it…be humble, chill the fuck out, and stop buying shit we don’t need… buying a chain with your face on it looking like a baldheaded black santa is not cool {Rick Ross} THEY NEVER SHOULD OF GAVE YOU NIGGAS MONEY!!!!

    I’m done ranting..now back to schoolwork {lol}
